The South Windsor Police
Department is sponsoring a Free
CHILD CAR SAFETY SEAT CHECK
Child Safety Seat Clinic by
the South Windsor Police
Department:
On Friday, February 10, 2012
the South Windsor Police
Department will be hosting a
free child safety seat
clinic at South Windsor Fire
Headquarters (Company #1,
1175 Ellington Road). The
event will be held from 1:00
PM to 6:00 PM. There is no
cost to have your child’s
car seat inspected, and no
appointment is needed.
Most parents that have a child car safety seat know how difficult it is
to install child’s car seat into the car correctly. Safety specialists
will be at the CHILD CAR SAFETY SEAT CHECK to show the correct
way to install the child‘s car seat and to make sure that the car seat
hasn’t been recalled.
The South Windsor Child
Safety Seat Team follows the
recommendations of the
American Academy of
Pediatrics (AAP) and the
National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (NHTSA)
which is keeping children
rear-facing from
birth until two years old or
to the height or weight
limits of the convertible
seat. Then, children
should be forward-facing in
a harnessed seat from two
years old to eight years old
up to the limits of the
Child Restraint, then in a
belt-positioning booster
seat until the child can
fit properly in a safety
seat-belt, typically
when the child is about
eight to twelve years old.
When using the vehicle’s
safety seat belt always use
the lap-shoulder belt for
best protection.
A final, best-practice
recommendation is for all
children under 13 years old
to ride in the back seat.
Please read and follow the
instruction manual of your
child’s safety seat and your
vehicle to find the safest
installation configuration.

Every
day, children are seriously hurt and die in motor vehicle crashes. Many
of these deaths and injuries can be avoided by simply using the child
car safety seat and seat belt correctly. Statistics show that 80% to
90% of children’s safety seats are installed or used incorrectly. Many
parents are unaware that they are using the child car safety seat wrong,
they have no idea of the risks to their child.
Most parents take their children out of a child restraint, car seat,
much too early. The South Windsor
Child Safety Seat Team follows the recommendations of the American
Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) which is:
Infants should stay in an Infant Seat or a Convertible Seat, rear
facing, from birth to 2 years old or
to the height or weight limits of the convertible seat
Children from two years old to eight
years old should be forward-facing in a harnessed seat, up to the limits
of the Child Restraint, then in a belt-positioning booster seat until
the child can fit properly in a safety seat-belt. This is typically when
the child is about eight to twelve years old. When using the vehicle’s
safety seat belt always use the lap-shoulder belt for best protection.
A final, best-practice recommendation is for all children under 13 years
old to ride in the back seat. Please read and follow the instruction
manual of your child’s safety seat and your vehicle to find the safest
installation configuration.
Children are not small adults. They need special protection when
traveling in motor vehicles. Their heads are proportionately larger,
their skulls are more fragile, their rib cage is thinner and they are
shorter than adults.
Children under the age of 15 accounted for over 1,700 motor
vehicle deaths in the United States. We can reduce this tragedy by
BUCKLING UP and making sure that the CHILD CAR SAFETY SEAT is
used properly.
The best car seat is the one that fits the child, fits the vehicle and
is one that you can install and use correctly every time.
Come to the CHILD CAR SAFETY SEAT CHECK and give your child a chance to
BUCKLE UP.
