Gary
K. Tyler was appointed as Chief of Police in July 6, 1987. He brought
to the town of South Windsor a renewed emphasis on community service and
drafted a mission statement that reflected quality service oriented values.
The department was restructured to best manage the mission of delivering
the highest quality of customer service.
Prior to that appointment, he served as Chief of Police
in Forest Grove, Oregon (1982-1987) and Chief of Police in Bonner Springs,
Kansas (1979-1982). He began his police career in El Cerrito, California
as a patrol officer and moved to Fremont, California in 1964, rising through
the ranks to become Captain in charge of Field Operations.
Chief Tyler received his Bachelor of Arts degree from
the University of San Francisco, California (1976) in Public Administration
and his Associate in Arts degree (1967) at San Jose City College, California.
He holds a lifetime teaching credential in Police Science from the State
of California. Chief Tyler did graduate work in Public Administration
at San Jose State University, California and the University of Kansas,
Kansas. He holds a Management Certificate issued by the Commission on
Police Officer Standards and Training (1977), State of California; an
Executive Certificate issued by the Board of Police Standards and Training
(1983), State of Oregon; and an Executive Certificate from the Criminal
Justice Command Institute (1995), Connecticut.

Chief Tyler resides in South Windsor with his wife Virginia.
They have two grown children and four grandchildren.
